Introduction To Fisherman's Photography Guide...

The first time my stepfather took me fishing we went to a dock in my hometown (Nassau, Bahamas). Years later I remember the day as if it were yesterday. He showed me techniques how to bait my rod and throw the perfect cast to catch a fish. I dove into love with fishing and I’m still in love with it to this day. As a teenager I discovered photography; nine years later I’m a professional commercial lifestyle and sports advertising photographer. It wasn’t until I’ve been asked to photograph within the fishing community that reconnected my love with fishing. A few websites I referred to help me complete this on going series of fishing photography tips tips for you are: The Beginner's Guide to Better Fishing Photography, Ten Ways to Improve Your Fly Fishing Photography, Romano: More Fly Fishing Photography Tips, Find the Best Fishing Blogs

Anglers and photographers, we agree there are two photos that are normally taken on fishing trips, photos of the catch and photos of the scenery. These articles are not for those seeking technical photography tips or what camera to buy/ what camera you should be using.

It is my guide to making a great photo-story using whatever camera you have to make the image. I’ll guide you, and share what things that I found helpful from previous fishing experiences.

My goal here is to help you transform your pictures from snapshots to beautifully composed storytellers. These articles are to be shared amongst your friends and the people you invite on your fishing trips with cameras in their tackle boxes.

I’ll be using images I  photographed on my last two fishing trips to cast these articles and throughout the series I'll keep you posted with new images from my future trips. The first trip I was asked to photograph Johnny Damon’s fishing trip experience for a celebrity comedy fishing show. The second trip was to illustrate a fishing experience, for Mount Pleasant Fishing Lodge in Andros, Bahamas.

More to come...

A Happy Ending...

Beautiful colors, traditional music and great vibes filled the room when,
Hands For Hunger's, Paradise Plates 2011 closed with some good ol' Junkanoo.

I was operating on forty minutes of sleep for 1.5 days; both my camera's batteries and myself were on our way out. Despite that, no matter how tired a person may be, the bass from that Bahamian Junkaoo rhythm will liven you up. Unfortunately the music did nothing for my batteries.

I had to learn quickly had to maneuver through the wave of this group in order to get these photographs. The group rushed through the doors swing those huge drums and large costumes making my D300's with the battery-pack, 14-24mm lens and SB-900 attached look like a little mosquito passing through. Not an annoying mosquito though, just one that quickly flu from person to person then back again to person to person in order capture images shown above.

Corona or Heineken?

My beer of choice is Stella Artois. My favorites after Stella Artois are Corona and Heineken.

The problem that I have is deciding which beer I should order in the Bahamas (other than a Kalik or Sands Beer of course) because sadly, my seagulls can not locate a Stella.

Help me decide which beer I should order at our get-together!

Bahama Day Coolin'...

"Sometimes you just need to be around your people..." A lady in the other room just said that and I figured it would be a good way to dive into this blog post.

It's a beautiful Sunday in Bahamas and in a bit I'll go snorkeling with a few friends. It's always good returning to days like these.

"I wanted to live my life as a vacation; therefore, I made my job one." - DT.
I think when people see photographs like those and match my quote they get the wrong idea...a bit...days are awesome..but this is possible because the drive to hustle is a blessing.

The past few days I've been non-stop, little sleep, making sure our visuals were as perfect as possible for the event. Last night we had a great outcome to our H4H (Hands For Hunger) Paradise Plates 2011 event. The support our charity is getting excites me. Thanks to our sponsors, you've made the night possible and a special to two of our major sponsors, New Providence Development Company Limited and Tommy Hilfiger.

Sometime this week I'll be posting a few snap shots of the event to my facebook fan page.
(See links at the bottom of the post.)

It is so HOT over here right now! It scares me a bit because I've been fixing my summer's schedule to photograph projects on locations of the Out Islands of the Bahamas. Now that the event is over and done with, the rest of my days will be meetings for fishing photography/ Out Island community development project. I'm excited about the meetings because I'll beable to share with you more tips for you to continue you and enhance your PhotoHustlin'!
Thanks for passing by the blog! Until next time...

Tenba Camera Bag

Whenever I make a purchase, I look for two things value and quality. Some may argue that TENBA camera bags are expensive. They are on the pricier end of the graph, however, they're worth every penny. For me, the bags are designed well (durable) to protect the expensive gear fills it up.

We love to photograph on location; this summer will require a number of flights, therefore a number of airports, so I decided to purchase the one with wheels.

The bag has the ability to transform from travel luggage to book-bag/backpack straps. The padding makes the bag feel comfortable on my back, the lower strap for my waist takes the pressure off of my shoulders. I love the option of transforming into this format because it take me out of airport geek mode and make the bag perfect for me to hike with while scouting a location.

On both sides of the bag there are two pockets. So far the two side pockets became the perfect home to my headsets, and chargers for my laptops and cell phone. The front pocket/compartment shown on the first photograph, holds space for my tripod and in there is also a weather protector; like a little raincoat for the bag.

There's the space for my camera gear. The bag is prefect to hold my camera bodies, lens, hard-drives, SanDisk memory cards, and beneath it there's space that holds my 13" and 17" MacBook Pros.

If you are in need of a new camera bag and you want one that's durable and top quality I recommend investing in a camera bag by TENBA. It works for me and it makes traveling with my gear much easier.

Every Girl's Dream (Two) - Get A Little Wild.

Joe Castellon is a friend of a friend and became a friend of mine. Joe asked me if I would give him a crash course lesson in photography and I agreed; our mutual friend spoke highly of him. He was a quick learner, ambitious and we have a lot in common (good living, success and similar taste in women.)

Joe and I spent the entire day photographing and as the sun set I invited the model from Every Girl's Dream to be photographed in front of my Red Wall. We played loud music, we got wild, we had fun.

From there we did a little tweaking in Photoshop and now I'm sharing the images with you.

Don't Be A Bitch About It...

That's me this morning after having my photographs rejected by one of my biggest clients thus far. I snapped this photo using photo booth directly after we ended the call. (I'm now noticing my shirt is on backwards. I have to learn how to function like a human again. I've been editing this clients project non stop for the past few days before I fly again this weekend.) Not a good morning. Our post-production usually take about three-four weeks before we deliver our clients products. We haven't been shooting much cliental lately, because we have a ton of organizing to do to take our business to the next level. If goes as plan, I'm looking forward to an exciting/ busy summer of shooting. I can only hope that it goes that way, we've already seen what can happen when things don't go our way, but hey...learn from it, don't be a bitch about it.

As a man, we know how to handle rejection. We see a lady, we try to show her she's beautiful and she tells us to piss off. What do we do? We go on to the next one. You don't waste your time analyzing why she wasn't interested in you; if so you're only wasting more time. You are who you are. What you should do is, focus on the things that make you, you; focus on what you want the people to perceive you as and be about it. The right one(s) will come along someday. It's like fishing, you've got to wait. When you find the right location/ when you start using the right bait (or other methods to capture your fish) you'll attract tons of fish, making you a better businessman/sports-fisherman.

In business my locations are perfect, the bait seems to work, however, the fish the bites manages to wiggle off of the hook.

From here on I'll be diving into the water with my fucking spare gun! I'm coming for you.

I wish not to mention the name of my client because not only will it be bad business, it will also be free advertising; no can do.

Client:
"Dwayne,
...You handled rejection like a pro.
I love your energy and passion for your craft. Those are the two most important ingredients to success, experience being the 3rd.
The 1st 2 are gifts, the 3rd is earned through doing..."

PhotogHustlaz,

Everyone's not going to like your work. As I replied to my client, I focus on providing the best quality that I can deliver and I did that. The client didn't like it so what am I to do, give up on the last nine years of my journey. No, I'll just keep on shooting more to keep on getting better. To add to this, I've been a pro at this therefore I knew how a pro should handle rejection. You win some you loose some, it's the life and death factor of this business war game we play. However, to dilute that rejection puddle/ to have a stronger hook/ to bring more fishes on board to stop my family's hunger, I'll be throwing stronger hooks, teaching my passengers on board (ofc they wear Sperry - #Shoutout to my Topsider Riders a.k.a. Big Yacht Gang - We Wear Sperry) how to wheel the fishes in as I dive into the internets vast sea of clients with a net and spear gun.

P.S. I said don't be a bitch about it and here I am not being a bitch about it but I'm bitching about it. Only to help motivate you when you come across the things that have happened to me. Never stop your hustle. Go harder.

-
Dwayne.

An Artist "Get Better" Kit...

Well it's flu season here in Miami again and....I just happened to get a bit of it! So many people in this little-big city it's almost was expected; a few of my friends got sick, I stayed away from them but the little bug managed to take a kayak vacation in my blood stream! Damit.

The photograph above - My getter better kit for you...seriously.

I found my get better method a few years ago when I started to travel heavily by myself. There's nothing worst than having to go to a remote location by yourself and find yourself sick...blah. Not good.

The pillow represents the most important thing - you must rest/relax; don't run your body down, the rest is important. For me this is always the hardest part because I try to tell my mind that I'm not sick so I can feel better but naw don't bullshit yourself like I do sometimes. Get the rest. (I'll be going back to bed after I publish this.)

Tylenol is a must in my medicine kit (along with orange juice - I forgot to photograph the juice in here but please don't buy that concentrated shit!)

The hoodie and socks - dress warm. Your body might feel as if it's too hot, then too cold, then hot again but hell with it keep warm don't listen to your mind at this point; if you're like me I know you'll probably be miserable with the world at this point. Again, just rest.

Finally, the Topsiders...well...you know I had to plug them in here...they are just incase you have to make a quick run to the store to re-up on that Campbell's chicken noodle soup, just because your sick doesn't mean your feet shouldn't feel super comfortable on the run!

Until next time....
